If you’re looking for things to do in Madison WI, one of my favorite things about this city is that there’s always something happening.
Good food. Local events. Outdoor spaces. Live music. Coffee shops. Markets. Random little hidden gems you accidentally stumble into and immediately text your friends about.
As someone who has lived and worked in the Madison area for years, these are some of the places and experiences I recommend over and over again.
Whether you’re visiting Madison for the weekend, new to the area, or just looking for something different to do, here are a few favorites.
Best Downtown Things To Do in Madison WI
Downtown Madison honestly has such a good energy to it, especially once the weather gets nice again.
Walk State Street, grab coffee, sit by the Capitol, hit a farmers market weekend, or spend an evening at the Terrace with a drink watching the sunset over the lake.
If you’ve never experienced summer at the Memorial Union Terrace, add it to your list immediately.
Visit Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison WI
Olbrich is one of those places that somehow feels peaceful no matter how busy life gets.
The outdoor gardens are beautiful during spring and summer and the conservatory is perfect during Wisconsin winters when everyone desperately needs warmth and greenery.
It’s also one of my favorite places in Madison for photos.

Explore Garver Feed Mill
Garver Feed Mill is one of my favorite Madison spaces because there’s always something happening there.
Coffee, food, events, local makers, workshops, little pop ups. It has a really creative local energy to it that feels very Madison.
It’s also just a really cool building.
Check Out The Madison Public Market
The Madison Public Market is one of the newer additions to the area and I genuinely think it’s going to become a huge part of the Madison small business and food scene.
I recently attended an event there with NACE Madison and it was really exciting seeing the space come together and meeting so many local business owners involved in the project.

Visit Young Blood Beer Company’s New Deforest Location
One thing I’m really excited about this year is the new location for Young Blood Beer Company opening in Deforest at the end of May.
Young Blood already has a huge following downtown and their new space is going to be such a fun addition for people on the north side of Madison and surrounding communities.
You can check them out here:

Spend More Time Outside
One thing Madison absolutely gets right is outdoor spaces.
Between the lakes, bike trails, UW Arboretum, picnic spots, kayaking, patios, and random small parks tucked throughout the city, there’s always somewhere to go decompress for a bit.
Even just grabbing coffee and sitting outside somewhere pretty feels like a personality trait in Madison once winter finally ends.

Madison WI Food and Drink Spots To Check Out
Madison has so many genuinely great local restaurants and coffee shops.
Some of my favorite days honestly involve nothing more than grabbing coffee, wandering around a local market or greenhouse, and ending the day with good food somewhere downtown.
The local business community here is really special and people genuinely show up for each other.
Madison Is One Of Those Places That Sneaks Up On You
I think what makes Madison special is that it doesn’t always scream for attention the way larger cities do.
It’s smaller. More personal. More community driven.
But once you really start exploring it, you realize how much there actually is here.
Great food. Beautiful spaces. Good people. Constant local events. Tons of small businesses doing creative things.
It’s just a really easy place to love.
