Planning your engagement session is one of the most fun parts of the wedding experience. It’s a chance to slow down, spend time together, and get comfortable with your photographer before the wedding day arrives.
One of the biggest questions couples ask when planning their session is where to take their photos. Fortunately, Madison Wisconsin offers an incredible variety of engagement photo locations. Engagement photos in Madison Wisconsin can look completely different depending on the location you choose. From lakeside views and historic architecture to quiet nature trails and vibrant downtown streets, there are endless options for beautiful images.
Over the years I have photographed engagement sessions all across the Madison area. Some couples love the energy of downtown, others prefer peaceful nature locations, and some want something completely unique. The best location is always the one that reflects your personality as a couple.
Below are some of my favorite engagement photo locations in Madison Wisconsin.
Bobbi’s Tip: Choose a location that actually feels like you. Some couples love dressing up and exploring downtown Madison, while others feel more at home walking through nature or along the lake. The best engagement photos happen when the location fits your personality.
Wisconsin State Capitol
The Wisconsin State Capitol is one of the most iconic locations in Madison and a beautiful setting for engagement photos. The architecture, marble steps, and views around Capitol Square create a timeless and elegant backdrop.
This location works especially well for couples who want a classic look for their engagement session. The surrounding streets also offer plenty of variety, from historic buildings to charming corners of downtown.
From Behind the Camera: The Capitol area is perfect if you want variety during your session. Within a few blocks we can capture elegant architecture, quiet streets, and beautiful skyline views.

UW Arboretum
One of my favorite locations in the spring is the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. The space is huge and offers an incredible variety of scenery within a short distance. You’ll find wide open prairie views, greenery, wooded paths, and fields full of texture and tall grasses.
Spring here is especially beautiful. Toward the end of April the magnolia trees begin blooming, followed closely by apple and cherry blossoms. By mid to late May, the lilacs are usually in full bloom and the entire area feels vibrant and full of life.
Just a quick note for planning your session here: a photography permit is required for engagement photos at the Arboretum.
From Behind the Camera: If you love nature but don’t want to hike for miles in your engagement session outfits, the Arboretum is perfect. Many of the best photo spots are just a short walk from the parking lots.

Lakeside Engagement Photos
Madison is surrounded by water, which makes lakeside engagement sessions incredibly beautiful. Both Lake Mendota and Lake Monona offer stunning views, open skies, and some of the best sunset light in the city.
Docks, shoreline paths, and grassy lakefront areas all create natural backdrops that photograph beautifully. One of my favorite spots is near the UW Rowing Club just past the Memorial Union. The views across Lake Mendota are stunning, especially in the evening when the sun begins to drop and the light softens across the water.
It’s worth noting that commercial photography is not allowed directly on the Memorial Union Terrace without a permit, including photos in the iconic colorful chairs. However, the surrounding paths and lakefront areas nearby offer plenty of beautiful spots for engagement photos.
Another great lakeside location is along the paths and shoreline below the Edgewater Hotel. The steps leading down toward the lake create beautiful layers and views of the water that photograph incredibly well.
Quick tip: If you’re planning an engagement session near the Edgewater, it’s the perfect excuse to grab dinner afterward. The Statehouse restaurant inside the hotel makes one of the best old fashioneds in Madison.
Downtown Madison Engagement Sessions
You really can’t go wrong anywhere downtown. One of my favorite ways to start a session is parking near the Capitol and simply walking down State Street together.
Downtown Madison has such a great mix of textures and energy. Industrial buildings, cool storefronts, historic architecture, and urban alleyways all create backdrops that make the photos feel cinematic and alive. The movement of walking through the city also helps sessions feel natural and relaxed instead of overly posed.
For couples who love the city vibe, downtown Madison engagement sessions always feel fun and full of personality.
Nature Engagement Locations Near Madison
If you’re looking for peaceful scenery and wide open landscapes, there are some incredible nature locations just outside Madison that work beautifully for engagement photos.
A few of my favorite nature engagement photo locations near Madison include:
Ice Age National Scenic Trail
These locations are perfect if you love tall grasses, winding trails, wooded paths, and that quiet natural feeling that lets you slow down and enjoy the moment together.
After 20 Years of Weddings: Some of the most meaningful engagement photos happen when couples slow down, walk together, and forget the camera is even there.

Private Property and Greenhouse Sessions
I can’t talk about engagement locations without mentioning Guilded Grey Events. This space is truly special and offers a private, peaceful setting that you won’t find at most public parks.
The property features open landscapes, natural paths, beautiful sunset views, and a greenhouse filled with soft natural light. Because it’s a private location, sessions here feel relaxed and unrushed without the crowds that sometimes come with popular public spots.
The greenhouse creates a completely different atmosphere for photos. The light filtering through the glass combined with greenery and seasonal styling creates a warm and intimate environment that photographs beautifully year round.
There’s even a weathered vintage piano at the end of a boardwalk. What more could you ask for?

When to Schedule Your Engagement Session in Madison Wisconsin
Madison has four very distinct seasons, and each one brings something unique to engagement photos. The best time for your session really depends on the look and atmosphere you love most.
Spring sessions often begin in late April when the magnolia trees start to bloom. Shortly after, apple blossoms and cherry blossoms appear, followed by lilacs in mid to late May. Spring light feels soft and fresh, which makes it a beautiful time of year for photos.
Summer engagement sessions bring long evenings and warm golden sunsets. The extra daylight gives us plenty of time to explore different locations, especially downtown or along the lakes.
Fall is one of the most popular seasons for engagement sessions in Wisconsin. The changing leaves, warm colors, and cooler temperatures create an incredible backdrop for photos. October in particular can be stunning.
Winter sessions offer a completely different atmosphere. Snow-covered landscapes and quiet parks create a peaceful setting, and indoor locations like greenhouse sessions add warmth and greenery during the colder months.
Bobbi’s Tip: The best time of day for engagement photos is almost always about an hour before sunset. The light is softer, warmer, and incredibly flattering.
