I’m Bobbi, a wedding photographer based in Madison, and at my most recent wedding I photographed a couple’s getting ready and reception at Hamilton House in Whitewater. If you’re touring Hamilton House or just wondering what a wedding day there looks like, here’s how it went and what I’d want you to know.
A quick look at Hamilton House
Hamilton House is a newer micro wedding venue in a historic mansion on West Main Street in Whitewater. The limit is 65 guests, so it really is built for small weddings. Owners Kari and Mark host only one wedding a week, which means the whole house is yours for the day. It also means no other couples wandering into your portraits, and I appreciate that as a photographer.
Getting ready on the lower level
The entire lower level belongs to the wedding party. The space is filled with comfortable seating and plenty of mirrors. A private space like this gives me time to photograph the dress, the rings, the shoes, and the quiet moments with family without anyone feeling rushed.
Hamilton House also has overnight suites with king beds, inspired by French impressionist painters. If you book one, it makes a great backdrop for detail shots.
Ceremony options for a Hamilton House wedding
For this wedding, the ceremony was at Central Lutheran Church in Edgerton, a short drive from Whitewater. This is beautiful church that is over 100 years old! It’s a good reminder that you don’t have to hold the ceremony at the venue. The house works just as well as home base for getting ready and the reception.
If you’d rather keep everything in one place, Hamilton House has its own options. There’s an outdoor gazebo in the garden, and the Formal Parlor works for an indoor ceremony with live piano or violin. First English Lutheran Church is also right across the street.
If you’re deciding between spots, ask to see them at the time of day your ceremony would happen. The light at 2 pm looks very different from the light at 5 pm, and it changes how I photograph the day.
Cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing
After the ceremony, the rest of the day happened at Hamilton House. Cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing all stayed in the house, which is how the venue is set up to work. Guests spend cocktail hour in the piano bar, then move to the parlors for dinner, which have crystal chandeliers. After dinner, the piano bar turns into the dance floor.
Owner Mark cooked the dinner himself, and as the venue’s executive chef, the food is truly part of the entire experience. Kari and Mark are phenomenal hosts who genuinely love what they do. You can see how much heart and soul they put into making every guest feel welcome and cared for. They aren’t simply providing a beautiful space. They’re creating an experience people will remember long after the event is over.
Why Hamilton House works so well for photos
Hamilton House gives you the space for the whole day, up to 14 hours. That matters a lot for photography. There’s no rush, so we can walk the grounds for portraits without cutting into your reception. The venue even includes use of the estate for bridal portraits.
Small weddings are my favorite to photograph, too. With 65 guests or fewer, I get to know everyone by the end of the night, and it shows in the photos.
A few tips if you’re planning a wedding at Hamilton House
- Tour at the same time of day as your ceremony, so you can see the light in person.
- Use the whole property for portraits. The gazebo, the garden path, and the patio each give a different look.
- Bring your detail items to the lower level early, so I can photograph them before the day gets busy.
- Do the rehearsal. Hamilton House offers one onsite or by video, and it helps everyone feel calmer on the wedding day.
